 Security... from the inside out
Security has long been in the headlines. Everyone is probably well aware of the potential dangers of an unprotected network. But how many realize that some of the worst network breaches could actually occur from within the network?
A common example of this might be an internal computer becoming infected, turning it into the very launching point for another on-line attack. There are more serious, yet seemingly inconspicuous, breaches of corporate security that can happen from within the network perimeter.
Take for example a medical office employee wanting to access patient data they're not supposed to see. An unguarded database might just give them that access, while at the same time violating patient doctor confidentiality. The legal field is no less sensitive to these types of scenarios.
Employees, whether intentionally or not, should never be given the opportunity to access data that should be properly secured and hidden from prying eyes. In an era where most paper based records are turning electronic, proper security practices are essential to maintaining privacy and confidentiality. Security is not just about who is breaking in from the outside, it's also about who is looking at what from the inside.
